In the summer of 2022, veteran circus composer Peter Bufano gathered with the physical theater group Parallel Exit for a seasonal artist residency in upstate New York. The troupe of eight spent ten days at Lake Placid Center for the Arts, practicing with trapeze and mats and props, creating characters and story, choreography and music all at once. When not working or watching each other work, they boated on the lake, played with each other’s children, shared drinks at the one local restaurant still open for the season. The result was “Sunset Circus,” an immersive outdoor-oriented work of contemporary circus.

You expect a certain sound from circus music made this way: an intimate intensity undergirding the colorful reeling chaos of tuba oompahs and accordion trills. You expect certain sounds, too, from Peter Bufano, whose background in klezmer and Balkan brass brings a rich medieval texture to his spectacle-driven scores. Together, though, these distinct influences produce a curious effect. “Sunset Circus” strikes a tone that is both extravagant and earnest, both specific and universal. Amid the sounds evoking clowns and jugglers and the aerialist spinning on trapeze , you can see yourself strolling down a city street at sunset, or running to catch a train, or staring into a shop window only to catch a stranger’s eye. Like a silent movie or rain on a window, this music taps into the inherent drama of everyday life. Like everyday life, it’s all at once bombastic and poignant and fun and even forlorn in the way that things are when you feel them slipping into memory. It’s the music that plays in your head when you’re awake to life’s grandeur.
